Venue
The Summer School Reasoning Web 2006 is organised by the Network of Excellence REWERSE and hosted by the Centre of Artificial Intelligence (CENTRIA) at the New University of Lisbon (UNL), Portugal. The courses are given on a campus south of Tagus (Tejo) river, near Costa de Caparica, where accommodation is available. A shuttle service between campus and accommodation will be provided.
Lisbon
Lisbon (in Portuguese, Lisboa) is the capital and largest city of Portugal. The population in its metropolitan area exceeds two and a half million. Lisbon is situated in the west of Portugal on the bank of Tagus (Tejo) river's estuary mouth to the Atlantic Ocean.
Hosting Institution
The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) is the newest of three public universities in Lisbon. It consists of five faculties and several institutes located in various places in and outside the city of Lisbon.
The Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT) was founded in 1977. It integrates high-level technological knowledge with up-to-date perspectives in the social, human and health sciences. FCT has about 6000 undergraduate students, 270 Master of Science students, and 320 doctorate students. It has 260 professors (with PhD degree), 230 assistant teachers, and 220 non-academic staff.
The Departamento de Informática (DI) of the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia was the first School of Informatics and Computer Science in Portugal. From the 1970ies until now, it has been offering high-level graduate (BSc level) and post-graduate (MSc and PhD level) courses, and has been recognized as one of the top-schools in Portugal.
The Departamento de Informática hosts the Centro de Inteligência Artificial (CENTRIA), which organises the Summer School. CENTRIA is an institutionalised research centre funded by the Ministry for Science and Higher Education. It comprises 40 people, 21 of whom hold a PhD and the remainder being research students. Among the researchers there are 3 PhDs from the Universidade de Évora who carry out their research at CENTRIA.
CENTRIA is the largest national AI centre, and its senior researchers are internationally recognized. Its main areas of activity are Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Logic Programming, Natural Language, Constraints and Soft Computing, Machine Learning, and Intelligent Information Systems. CENTRIA has been evaluated three times by an independent international committee appointed by the Ministry and consistently labelled "Very Good".
Campus
FCT, and thus CENTRIA, is located on the Campus Monte de Caparica, situated on a hill on the southern bank of the Tagus (Tejo) river, 30 to 45 minutes from the center of Lisbon by public transportation. Coming from the city of Lisbon, one has to cross the river, either by car, bus, or train using the bridge, or by boat enjoying a nice and peaceful trip that takes no more than 12 minutes.

Accommodation
The main Summer School hotel is Hotel Costa Caparica, situated in the community Costa de Caparica some 6 km west of the campus, also to the south of the Tagus (Tejo) estuary and by the seashore known as Costa Azul. See also a sketch of the relative locations of Lisbon centre, FCT and Costa de Caparica.
Costa de Caparica, with 25 km of fine, white, soft sand beach, used to be a quiet fishing village up to the 1960ies. Since then, the white waves of the Atlantic and the extent of the sand have irresistibly attracted beach-lovers, transforming what used to be a fishing zone into a cosmopolitan summer resort. Nowadays it is visited by lots of tourists, especially on weekends and during summer.
As can be expected, restaurants, bars, etc. of many types and levels of quality are available in Costa de Caparica, and so are different kinds of accommodation.
Hotel Costa Caparica will be served by shuttle buses, which take approximately 15 minutes to the campus.
